Does Surrey have any grammar schools?
No. Surrey does not have any grammar schools, but some of the neighbouring authorities do and you may apply to any of those.
How can my child get a place at a grammar school
To be offered a place at a grammar school, your child will need to:
- Complete the supplementary form for that school. This form includes a request to sit the entrance exam which is called the 11+
- Sit and pass the 11+.
- As well as passing the 11+ your child may need to fulfil the admissions criteria for that school (see below for more details)
- You will need to have named that school on your Common Application form.
Is the application process exactly the same in all local authorities?
No. Although the process is similar, each authority has their own deadlines and procedures for completing supplementary forms and the tests, which although similar will not be the same.
How do I find out more about how to apply to grammar schools?
You can either contact the school(s) directly that you are interested in or contact the local authority’s admissions team for that particular school. They will be able to give you:
- A supplementary form to apply to sit the 11+ for that school
- The dates on which the forms should be returned and to whom
- The date(s) on which the test will be sat
- The date on which you will be advised of the results
If my child passes is he/she guaranteed a place at the school?
No. If the number of children passing the test for a particular school exceeds the number of places available then places will be offered in the order of the published admissions criteria for that school.
Do I still need to complete Surrey’s common application form?
YES. It is vital that you complete this form and include the name of the grammar school. If this school is your first preference, then it should be ranked as 1st on your form. If you fail to do this you will not be offered a place there even if your child passes the test.
If my child sits the 11+ but does not reach the required standard to be offered a grammar place and I have put the grammar school as my first preference on the common application form will his/her place at our non-selective second choice school be jeopardised?
No. Surrey County Council, in line with all other local authorities operates an Equal Preference system. This means that you will always be offered the highest ranked preference for which your child meets the criteria.
In other words, If your child fails the 11+ and therefore does not meet the criteria at your 1st preference school, the admissions criteria will be applied to him/her equally with all other children applying to your second preference. If he/she meets the criteria for this school, the place will be offered. |
